We want to share some unexpected and frustrating news following Telstra’s shutdown of the 3G network on 31 October. This change has had massive and unforeseen ramifications across many industries and users, including some of our My Buddy Gard devices. While this situation is entirely out of our control, we want to explain what has happened and how we’re working to support you.
What Happened?
Like mobile phones, many devices—including ours—switch between 5G, 4G, and 3G frequencies to ensure the best possible performance. Even though 4G frequencies handle most data functions, features like calling and SOS calls have historically partly relied on the 3G network as part of this dynamic system.
With the sudden shutdown of 3G, some older My Buddy Gard devices—such as the Adult Watch, Kids Buddy, and Buddy Pendant—are now unable to support call-related features, including the SOS calling function and Listen In feature.
What Still Works?
The good news is that other key features, including Live Tracking, Fall Detection, and SOS text alerts, remain fully operational on the affected devices.
Why Our New Round Buddy Watch Isn’t Affected
Technology has since evolved, and our new Round Buddy Watch uses an advanced system called VoLTE (Voice over LTE). This allows all functions, including calls, to operate exclusively on 4G frequencies, eliminating the need for 3G. Unfortunately, VoLTE was not widely available when older devices were developed, which is why they’ve been affected by this change.
Our manufacturer has thoroughly explored potential fixes for the affected devices. However, they have advised us that there are no guarantees a solution can be implemented. This is a limitation beyond our control, and we share your frustration at this situation.
